Introduction to five common 40G QSFP+ optical modules 

QSFP+ is an optical module package type defined by the IEEE organization for 40G networks, which greatly meets the market demand for higher density, high-speed pluggable solutions. Now, 40G networks are very common in most data centers, and optical modules are one of the essential components for interconnecting data center equipment. This article introduces you to five common 40G QSFP+ optical modules.

1.40G LR4 QSFP+ Optical Module

40G LR4 QSFP+ optical module is generally used together with LC single mode fiber patch cords, the transmission distance can reach up to 10km, and it has 4 data channels, they will transmit data at the same time.The advantages of 40G LR4 QSFP+ optical module are high-density, low-cost, high speed, high-capacity, and low-power.

2.40G SR4 QSFP+ Optical Module

40G SR4 QSFP+ optical module is often used with MPO/MTP connectors in 40G data transmission, has four independent full-duplex channels, also transmits through four channels, and the transmission rate is the same as LR4. The difference is that 40G SR4 QSFP+ optical module is often used with multimode fiber, and the transmission distance is 100m when used with OM3 fiber patch cord, and 150m when used with OM4 fiber patch cord.

3.40G LR4 PSM Optical Module

As a highly integrated 4-channel optical module, the 40G LR4 PSM optical module has the advantages of high port density and low cost. The optical port of this optical module adopts parallel single-mode technology - PSM, and the transmission distance is 10km by utilizing 4-channel parallel design MPO/MTP interface.40G LR4 PSM optical module is commonly used to connect with single-mode ribbon fiber connector.

4.40G QSFP+ DAC High Speed Cable

The 40G QSFP+ DAC high-speed cable consists of two 40G QSFP+ optical modules and a copper cable.

40G QSFP+ AOC active optical cable is the core component to realize parallel optical interconnection, which is composed of two 40G QSFP+ optical transceiver devices connected by a ribbon optical cable.

QSFP+AOC Active Optical Cable is a highly efficient integrated fiber optic cable assembly product designed for short-haul multi-channel data communication and interconnect applications, with four data channels in each signal direction at 10Gbps per channel.

Advantages of AOC:

(1) Lower transmission power, so less power consumption

(2) Weight and volume are far less than high-speed cable

(3) Longer transmission distance (can reach 100 to 300 meters)
